STRINGS: Live in Concert, at PNCA Islamabad

I came to know through some of my acquaintances that there's a Strings concert coming up on Tuesday evening [6th April 2010]. I liked some selective songs of Strings but never watched them perform live. Since, I got this chance, I thought it's better to avail it. I, with my friends, went at the venue which was PNCA, i.e. Pakistan National Counsel of the Arts.

We were told that the time is around 6pm, but it would be better if we reach there at 7. Since we had to pick some friends around in hurry, we got somewhat late, and on our way, there were those Islamabad Police checking random cars. Hard Luck!!! There, they asked for our IDs, and then the papers of the car, which we forgot at home. And there that police started behaving in a typical way, discreetly asking for some "favor". We are in fact not in any mood to give some cash to them. "Hamaray liye phir Aap kia kar saktay hain?!"

Since we told them that we are going to a music concert and we already spent Rs.2500 on tickets, which we actually did, and that made them think that if these guys can spend this much on that event, they sure can do something for us. So they just started beating about the bush and wasted our time with very useless inquiries because we told them we're getting late. Their topics ranged from having a war with India, the importance of learning Kalma by heart, style of beard, nature of jobs of the father, people calling fake references when they're caught by police, etc. Anyways, they finally released us after around wasting our 30 minutes on the road. Then we rushed to the venue cursing those policemen, ran inside, and here's what we saw...

Hall was nicely decorated, sponsored by Warid Glow written in a large size on the backdrop, and there were that Bilal and Faisal, collectively known as Strings performing "Sar kiye ye pahaar". We joined the crowd and started enjoying the show. Then came Anjaane, then another song I wasn't familiar of but it sounded something like Alvida.

Since they were late in starting that event, and the hall management wanted then to finish at 9 pm, so it was really hard for them to perform even more songs. Faisal told us that management is pushing them to end this at 9, while we only had 5 minutes to 9 that time. Faisal said they'll perform 4 more songs, but they were able to sing only 2 after that.

Duur was beautifully performed. Crowd enjoyed and sang with them. Then the final song was "Hai koi hum jesa". It was indeed the best song of the show. Crowd enjoyed it like hell, and everyone sang that catching phrase "Ay O Ay O Ay O Aa... Aa Ri Aari Aari O...". It was a really beautiful performance.

Band members were looking quite cool. They are in fact such nice and decent chaps, and this is the first time I was seeing them. The crowd was an organized one, and most of the people seems like from NUST. This even was organized by some Marketing Group of NUST students known as Incognito Cognition. But since they had not offered me a free pass of this event, so I'm not writing more about them...

Overall, it was a beautiful performance, although we wanted to enjoy it for some more time.

LOL :P thanks :P I am sorry for not getting you a free pass! but chalo atleast you enjoyed! and I don't want you to praise cognition either, because I did what I was asked to do, I am pretty sure many people would have come with free passes, but i thought maybe we could make some profits, which we unfortunately didn't! Because in the end nobody cared they belonged to cognition, they just cared about giving out the passes...be it for free! I am pissed at my own group so I wouldn't ask you to say even one nice word about it!

We are not having a fashion show I think...but the comments I had to hear while selling tickets were horrible...the concert was good, but not a very good way to generate money, many people didn't come becasue they don't like strings!

Anyway thank you for paying and beign there with your buddies. My apologies for no free pass.

    =)

  3. It was a great performance, very neat and serious, but quite engaging one.

I think this event wasn't planned/organized very well. It wasn't much advertised anywhere. Didn't hear of it on FB. Not even any FB Event was created, that's why many people were reluctant that if it's really some concert there.

Then, all this ticket selling system was't up to the mark. Even the venue printed on the ticket was wrong, [It was written Lok Varsa, Shakkar Parrian there]. Then ticket price wasn't fixed either. We have never seen such margin ever that if we buy a ticket of Rs.500 and when we reach there, tickets are available for Rs.300 at the gate. No price on ticket that shows casualness. Also, the amount Rs.500 seems a bit High. An affordable price like Rs.300 would have generated even more audience, and ultimately the profits.

But no doubt, the performance was beautiful!

  4. The real purpose was to generate funds, and people should have cooperated with students. 500 Rs is a very nominal charge for a band like Strings. It was well arranged and went smoothly. Am sorry to hear that there won't be a fashion show, for which you needed funds. Despite almost zero publicity the hall was jam packed. And I think it was better there was no publicity, otherwise there wouldn't have been more space to accommodate people. 'Coz believe me LOTS of people would have jumped at this opportunity as there are MANY die hard Strings fans out there. It's a really mature band, and myself n people in my age group grew up with the band, when sar kiye ye pahar was their first song. Great memories.
I'm not from NUST but I made sure I gathered as many people as I could and we all paid, what's the point of free passes when students have actually made this effort?

  5. Well Abeer, I myself paid, and I have mentioned that Strings is a mature band and audience were really organized one.
I only mentioned few points in my above comments that shows some flaws in management, like the wrong venue printed on the tickets. [I understand there might be reasons, and they changed it after printing the tickets, but it sounds confusing. At least guys selling them should have manually corrected the address].

Then the issue of price. It's fine if we're going to watch Strings for that amount, but when we already bought them from a NUST student before coming to the venue, and when we reached there we got to know that many people bought it for Rs.300, which left a bad taste. Even if they're planning for some discount, a price must be there on the ticket.
